Elizabeth Brownlow is a native Californian living in Western Massachusetts. She has been painting and drawing all of her life. She has a Visual Arts Degree from Holyoke Community College, where she was elected to Phi Theta Kappa, and in addition to receiving an Award of Excellence in Recognition of Outstanding Achievement in Visual Art, won the Visual Art Faculty Prize. She then graduated magna cum laude from Mount Holyoke College with a degree in Art History. Since graduating, Elizabeth has studied with Dennis Sheehan, Don Demers, William Davis, and Joseph McGurl, but is basically self-taught.
She prefers to paint from life, either in outdoor settings or using live models, but she is not opposed to using her own photographs as aids to her memory. She also paints still lifes and works from plein air sketches in her studio in Easthampton, Massachusetts. Like her favorite masters, turn-of-the-twentieth-century American tonalists and their Barbizon predecessors, she uses a harmonious palette with subdued tones aiming to capture a scene and register the quality of an implicatory moment in time.
